Fastbrake Newsletter - Mark McLaughlin Spotlight Chapter #2

PMB Performance Coachwerks Spotlight - Mark Mclaughlin Chapter #2

Welcome back to the FastBrake Newsletter, where we continue to chronicle the meticulous restoration of Mark McLaughlin's rare Factory 914-6 Porsche. In our last installment, we detailed the arrival of this historic vehicle, famously featured on the cover of Brett Johnson's 1989 guide to Porsche authenticity, the complete body restoration including rust removal and a fresh Silver Metallic paint job, the installation of a Tractive active damper suspension system, and the swap to a modernized 2.7-liter EFI engine with Jenvey Heritage throttle bodies.

Since then, our team at PMB Performance has made significant strides, bringing this classic closer to road-ready perfection. We've focused on enhancing performance, authenticity, and drivability with a series of targeted upgrades. Let's dive into the latest developments.

Wheels and Tires

One of the standout additions is a set of extremely rare and valuable Mahle Gas Burner wheels, complete with a spare and fitted with vintage Pirelli CN36 tires. These 15×5.5″ single-piece magnesium wheels feature a classic ten-spoke design, a 42mm offset, and original part number 901.361.017.00, along with Mahle crown insignia. The Gas Burner is the lightest set of Porsche factory wheels, befitting of this car's autocross heritage.

Mark had sourced these a while back and had them refinished but wasn’t happy with what looked like “rattle-can” results.  In walks the one and only Harvey Wiedman from Wiedman’s Wheels. Harvey got the call and worked his magic and applied a factory silver for a pristine finish. They perfectly complement the 914-6's heritage while providing lightweight performance. The Pirelli CN36 tires add that authentic period touch, ensuring this setup is as visually striking as it is functional. Interested in getting a set for yourself? Custom 2.7L Flat 6

Building on the engine installation from our previous update, we've fully fitted and are working on fine-tuning the 2.7-liter Jenvey Heritage EFI setup. The Jenvey Heritage Series IDA3 throttle bodies, (available in configurations like the 42mm TDA3P-42 pairs), are engineered to mimic the look of classic Triple throat IDA3C carburetors while hiding modern injectors in the mock float bowls for a seamless vintage aesthetic.

These Porsche-specific ITBs deliver improved power, throttle response, and reliability, and with these custom 908 style filters (added for optimal airflow and show) they really look the part. After meticulous EFI tuning, we achieved a thrilling first start, the engine roared to life with smooth precision, marking a major milestone in bringing this powerplant to it's full potential. If that sounds like the right fit for your motor, we carry Jenvey's full Porsche catalog right here at PMB Performance.

Transmission

Shifting gears, literally, we've installed our favorite, the RennShift Performance Shifter, tailored for 1973-1976 side-shift 914 models. This upgrade features adjustable throw reductions of 20% or 33%, spring-loaded gates, bronze bushings, and a black anodized base, transforming the vague factory feel into something crisp and engaging.

It retains compatibility with the original boot and knob while including reverse lock-pawls for safety. Paired with this, we've implemented shift linkage improvements using the Tangerine Racing Kit, which replaces the stock rod with universal joints and bronze bushings for precise motion transfer to the gearbox.

Available in orange or black, this kit requires minor console mods but delivers competition-level shifting accuracy.

“Side Shift you say?” Indeed! Mark (rightfully) opted for an improved side shifter for his daily driving routine while keeping the original numbers matching engine and transmission for his custom run stand in the garage.

Body

The interior received a full refresh, with switches, stalks, and the dash meticulously restored by specialists at Just Dashes. Known for their concourse-quality work since 1981, they handle all of the vacuum formed interior pieces like the dash pad, knee pad and A & B pillar covers, ensuring every component in this 914-6 looks and functions like new. This attention to detail extends to the doors, where we've installed fresh glass and body seals for a weather-tight, rattle-free cabin.

Exhaust

On the exhaust side, we've fabricated a custom rear valance to accommodate the new custom sport muffler, giving the 914-6 a sleek, integrated look while optimizing flow. Complementing this are SSI stainless steel heat exchangers, which provide efficient heat management and a throaty exhaust note without compromising the car's classic lines.

Other Goodies

Finally, we've added a custom lightweight battery setup using the Rennline mount kit, designed specifically for the 914 and compatible with Odyssey 925 batteries for reduced weight and secure placement.

This upgrade shaves pounds from the build, improving balance and handling. Check it out HERE.

Wrapping Up

With these enhancements, Mark's 914-6 is evolving into a true driver's car that honors it's factory roots while embracing modern refinements.
