Product details

The EMPI 98-9412-B is a replacement retainer spring that holds the glass lens in the early-style headlight on the VW Type 1 Beetle and Type 2 Bus from 1950–1967. After decades of road spray these small springs rust, weaken, or snap, and a weak or missing spring lets the lens shift and rattle. EMPI cross-references the spring to VW part 111 941 125C. It is sold individually, so you can replace a single broken spring or fit a fresh set.

An early headlight uses several springs around the lens, and supplier counts for these units do not agree, so count the springs on your own assembly when you take it apart. With the light apart, check the grey lens gasket (EMPI 98-9411-B) and the headlight assembly gasket (98-9414-B). EMPI also offers chrome rims with adjusting screws at 5 and 7 o'clock (98-2059) or 2 and 7 o'clock (98-2060), and replacement glass lenses for the Type 1 through 1966 in stock (98-9501), Cibie (98-9502), and Porsche 911 (98-9505) styles.

Fitment & Compatibility

Fits the VW Type 1 Beetle 1950–1967 and Type 2 Bus 1950–1967 with the early headlight unit. EMPI supplies a different late headlight retaining unit (98-1064) for 1967–1979, so check which style your car has, especially on a 1967.

Common Questions

How many springs do I need?
Count the springs on your headlight, add any that were already missing, and order that number.

Will these fit my 1968 Beetle?
No. EMPI's fitment for this spring ends with 1967, and later cars use the late-style retaining unit.

PMB Performance has supplied early VW lighting parts for over 20 years.
