Product details
EMPI 98-1183-B is the upper fuel pump gasket for 1961–1974 air-cooled VW engines, sealing the joint where the mechanical fuel pump sits on its flange block (VW reference 113 127 313). EMPI calls it the gasket for the top of the base. It keeps engine oil from seeping out between the pump and the flange. Every pump replacement disturbs this joint, so it is the gasket to have on hand whenever the pump comes off. It works with generator-style and alternator-style pumps. Sold individually.
Below the flange sits a second gasket, EMPI 98-1182-B (VW 113 127 311), which seals the flange to the crankcase. If the flange lifts off with the pump, replace that one too. A pump swap is also the time to check the pushrod. EMPI makes it in 108mm (98-1180-B) for generator-era straight pumps and 100mm (98-1181-B) for the angled pump on 1973–1974 Type 1 and Karmann Ghia.

Common Questions
How many gaskets does a stock VW fuel pump use?
Two. This one goes between the pump and the flange, and EMPI 98-1182-B goes between the flange and the case.
Do I need a new one when I change my fuel pump?
Yes. A gasket that has already been compressed doesn't reseal reliably, so fit a fresh one each time.
