Product details

The EMPI 86-1086-1 is a deluxe C.V. joint boot kit for the 100mm I.R.S. C.V. joints on the 1968–1979 VW Type 2 Bus, and it includes a neoprene boot, a moly grease pack, hardware, and six C.V. bolts. It corresponds to VW boot kit 251 598 201. The standard kit, 86-1086-D, has the same boot, grease, and hardware but no bolts. Each C.V. joint is held to its flange by six bolts, so one deluxe kit covers the boot and fasteners for one joint.

If the joint already clicks or the races are pitted, EMPI's 87-9917-K C.V. joint kit for Type 2 and Vanagon (100mm, .750 inch balls) includes a new joint, boot, clamps, snap rings, and grease. Orders for this kit often add the torque distribution washers for the 100mm joint (EMPI 87-5081, VW 211 501 357) and extra moly grease (86-3005-0 or 86-3000-0).

Fitment & Compatibility

EMPI applies this boot kit to the Type 2 Transporter from 1968–1979 with I.R.S., inner and outer joints. EMPI also uses the same boot kit on the Vanagon rear axles from 1980–1991, and on the Vanagon Syncro from 1986–1991 at the rear (inner and outer) and front inner joints. Buses through 1967 have swing axles with no C.V. joints, so this kit does not apply to them. Vanagon owners should check that the supplied bolts match their joints before final assembly.

Installation & Tuning Notes

If the joint comes apart while you clean it, index it correctly on reassembly. EMPI notes that the narrow points of the outer housing must line up with the wide areas of the inner race. A joint indexed wrong will bind, limit axle movement, and damage itself.

Common Questions

Does this fit my 1967 Bus?
No. The 1967 and earlier Type 2 uses swing axles without C.V. joints. This kit is for the 1968–1979 I.R.S. Bus.

How many kits do I need?
One kit does one joint. Each rear axle has an inner and an outer joint, so booting both axles takes four kits.

What is the difference between this and 86-1086-D?
The deluxe 86-1086-1 adds six C.V. bolts. Boot, grease, and hardware are the same.
