914Rubber Cooling Flap Control Bearing Shell for Air Cooled Porsche and Volkswagen Applications
Maintain precise engine cooling in your air-cooled Porsche or Volkswagen with the 914Rubber Cooling Flap Control Bearing Shell (part number 021.119.187), designed for Porsche 912 (1965-69), 914 (1970-76), 912E (1976), and select VW models with Type 4 engines, like the Bus or Vanagon. This injection-molded nylon bushing seats in the fan shroud, supporting the cooling flap control rod to ensure smooth operation of the flap system. Two bearing shells are required per car, stabilizing the rod that adjusts airflow to the 1.7L, 1.8L, or 2.0L cylinders.
PMB Performance, with over 20 years of Porsche expertise, has partnered with 914Rubber for nearly two decades, selling more 914Rubber SKUs than any other retailer. Unlike 3D-printed alternatives, this bearing shell is crafted with uniform precision, matching OE specifications for fit and durability. Made from high-strength nylon, it withstands engine bay temperatures up to 220°F and resists wear from the rod’s rotational friction, ensuring consistent flap movement compared to worn factory bushings that can seize or crack.
The cooling flap system, driven by a thermostat opening at 85-90°C (185-194°F) for Type 4 engines, regulates cylinder head temperatures to prevent overheating or overcooling, which can cause oil breakdown or piston scuffing. A failing bearing shell can misalign the control rod, leading to stuck flaps, uneven cooling, and potential engine damage under high loads. This 914Rubber shell installs securely in the shroud, supporting the rod’s 5mm diameter for reliable operation. Regular inspection during fan maintenance is key to engine longevity.
