Product details

The EMPI 16-9550-0 Center Console is a black ABS plastic console that sits over the shifter on the center tunnel of 1949–1979 VW Type 1 models, 1956–1974 Karmann Ghias, and all years of the Type 3 and Thing, adding cup holders and storage. It measures 21 3/4 inches long and 5 1/8 inches wide, and stands 4 13/16 inches at its tallest point. Along the top are two cup holders, about 3 13/16 and 2 3/4 inches across. Two rectangular bins hold change, sunglasses, and small items, one roughly 5 5/8 inches long and the other about 3 9/16 by 3 15/16 inches. A 2 1/2 inch round opening sits at one end. It installs easily over the shifter and fits snug on the tunnel.

EMPI's other console, 16-9555, is a different product. That one is black vinyl over a wood structure, includes a shift boot, runs 23 1/4 inches long, and is made only for 1968–1979 Type 1 sedans and convertibles. The ABS 16-9550 reaches back to 1949 Beetles and across the Ghia, Type 3, and Thing, so it is the EMPI console for pre-1968 Beetles and those models.

Fitment & Compatibility

Fits VW Type 1 from 1949–1979, Karmann Ghia from 1956–1974, and all years of the Type 3 and the Thing. On 1964 and earlier models it may need notching for the heater control knob.

Installation & Tuning Notes

Set the console over the shifter and onto the tunnel to check fit before cutting anything. On 1964 and earlier cars, mark the heater knob location with the console in place, then trim a little at a time until it clears.

Common Questions

Will it fit my 1963 Beetle?
Yes. Expect to notch it for the heater control knob, as on any 1964 or earlier car.

Does it fit a 1971 Super Beetle?
EMPI's fitment covers all 1949–1979 Type 1 models and does not exclude the Super Beetle. Test fit over the shifter before trimming.

Does it include a shift boot?
No. The vinyl-covered 16-9555 console is the EMPI version with a shift boot.
