Product details

The EMPI 00-3231-B is a black step-style intake manifold boot that joins the center section of a VW dual port intake manifold to the end casting on one side of the engine. It corresponds to VW reference number 113 129 729B and is sold individually in bulk packaging, so you can replace one tired boot or buy two for both sides. These boots seal the joint between the manifold tube and the casting. When one cracks, hardens, or slips, the engine draws in air that never passed through the carburetor, which leans the mixture and usually shows up as a rough or hunting idle.

This is the same black boot EMPI puts in its dual port installation kit 00-3412-0, which adds clamps and dual port intake gaskets. If you want red, the bulk boot is 00-3404-B and the red kit is 00-3230-0. EMPI also offers urethane boots (black 00-3407-B, red 00-3403-B) and a split-boot design, 00-9960-0, intended to make installation easier. Replace the clamps too if they are rusted or stretched. The small clamp is 00-3215-0 and the large clamp is 00-3216-0, each sold as a pair.

Fitment & Compatibility

Fits 1600cc dual port engines in the 1971–1974 Type 1 and Karmann Ghia, and the 1971 Type 2. Single port engines use different boots and hardware.

Installation & Tuning Notes

Fit new boots whenever you install a new or replacement manifold. The gap between the center tubes and the end castings varies from one manifold to the next, and some tubes sit slightly inside the castings, so slide each boot on until it covers both sides fully before you tighten the clamps.

Common Questions

Is this sold as a pair?
No, it is one boot. A dual port engine uses two, one on each side of the manifold.

Will it fit a single port engine?
No. Single port engines use the parts in EMPI's 00-3413-0 single port installation kit.
