Reviving a Legend: Thomas Roth's Porsche 914-6 Conversion Takes Shape at PMB Performance
At PMB Performance, we're passionate (maybe even a little crazy) about breathing new life into classic Porsches, and few projects excite us more than a meticulous 914-6 conversion. Today, we're thrilled to spotlight Thomas Roth's stunning build; a late-model 1975 tub that's being transformed into a factory-inspired 914-6 Thomas-Magnum Opus. This isn't just a restoration; it's a masterpiece of precision engineering, custom craftsmanship, and unwavering attention to all of the details. Let's dive into the highlights of this evolving project.
A Foundation of Authenticity and Excellence
Starting with a solid 1975 chassis, we're equipping this 914 with all the coveted factory 914-6 goodies to evoke the spirit of Porsche's mid-engine marvel from the early '70s. Every step honors the original design while incorporating thoughtful upgrades for modern reliability and performance.
-
Backdated Bumpers and Custom Front End: To capture that timeless early-914 aesthetic, we've performed a late-model bumper backdate. Up front, Thomas wanted something that he’d never seen on other 914-6 conversions. A one-off 914-8 inspired bumper and valance, all crafted in metal, adding an aggressive look and improved aerodynamics, blending vintage style with subtle and classy demeanor. Check out our video on this awesome 908 style bumper HERE.

-
Early-Model Dash Revival: One of the standout features is the custom 914-6 early-model dash installation. Sliding this proper assembly into the late-model tub took some work, but it feels like it was meant to be there from the factory. The full test-fit reveals seamless integration, complete with factory-correct flocking that transports you back to 1970. Small details like these make a massive difference, infusing the cockpit with authentic 914-6 and 914-6/GT vibes. Check out the video of us installing the dash HERE.
-
Hand-Fabricated Custom Glovebox: As mentioned above, details matter in a build like this. We hand-fabricated a custom glovebox to perfectly accommodate the early-model dash “ventless” layout, ensuring functionality without compromising the dash's authenticity. It's these crazy little touches that elevate the interior from great to extraordinary. Check out the video on how we made this glovebox HERE.

-
Powerhouse Under the Hood: At the heart of this build beats a Superformance 2.5-liter MFI motor. This potent engine promises exhilarating performance, staying true to the 914-6's short-stroke air-cooled heritage while delivering reliable power for today's roads.
-
Stance and Grip: Thomas is committed to preserving the classic narrow-body silhouette—no wide-body flares here. Instead, we're optimizing the stance with Maxilite "Deep 6" (front) and "7R" (rear) Fuchs-style wheels. These lightweight replicas capture the iconic look of original Porsche Fuchs while providing the perfect offset for maximum track width and the largest possible contact patch without rubbing or modifications.
-
Maxilite Fuchs-Style Wheels and Tires: The "7R" rears are legendary for allowing wider tires under narrow-body fenders, and we've already proven it works flawlessly: on a previous narrow-body build, we successfully fitted 225-section tires in the rear for superior grip and planted handling. Originally designed to give the 911R factory race cars as much tire as possible, Maxilite’s stunning reproductions make this amazing wheel offset affordable. Paired with appropriately sized fronts, this setup delivers balanced, confident road manners that honor the 914-6's nimble character while providing modern drivability.

-
Impeccable Metalwork and Protection: True to our mantra at PMB Performance, no car leaves our shop with even a hint of rust. All metalwork has been executed to perfection, ensuring structural integrity and longevity. We've meticulously matched the factory 914-6 undercoating and seam sealing for superior protection against the elements, safeguarding this beauty for generations.
-
Stunning Custom Paint Job: Fresh from the booth, this 914 gleams with a custom “Tangerine” (Blútorange) finish that's nothing short of breathtaking. The "first breath after the paint" moment captures the car coming alive, its vibrant Tangerine hues (one of our favorites) and flawless application highlighting every curve. Combined with the undercoating, it's a testament to our commitment to both form and function.

-
Factory-Accurate Wiring Harness: Electrical reliability is non-negotiable, especially in a classic like this. We've installed a complete wiring harness from Restoration Design, specifically for 1970-72 Porsche 914-6 models. This all-new setup replaces brittle and oxidized old wiring, preventing potential fire hazards and saving countless hours on troubleshooting. In fact, the hours saved easily pay for this expensive step. We install new Restoration Design wiring harnesses on all of our builds. As we like to say, do it right, do it once—and sleep easy knowing your restoration is wired for success.

Progress Update: Nearing the Finish Line
This project is humming along beautifully. We're now prepping for gauges and interior installation, where the cabin will truly come to life with period-correct touches. Once that's dialed in, the engine and transmission will be the final flourish, turning this 914-6 into a road-ready icon.
Stay tuned for more updates as Thomas Roth's build races toward completion. We'll share behind-the-scenes glimpses, dyno runs, and the triumphant first drive. If you're inspired to start your own Porsche project, reach out—we're here to make your vision a reality.
