How to Buy Your First Porsche 914

Buy the Body First. Everything Else Can Be Fixed.

How do you buy your first Porsche 914? What should you look out for?

Rust. Rust. Rust. Rust. Rust.

That could nearly be the entire article. But after decades of repairing, restoring, driving, buying, selling and inspecting Porsche 914s, I’m certain we can offer a little more useful guidance:

Buy the best body you can afford.

Engines can be rebuilt. Transmissions can be repaired. Suspensions, brakes, interiors and electrical systems can all be renewed. A severely rusted 914, however, can require hundreds of hours of cutting, measuring, fabricating, welding, aligning, sealing and refinishing before the first mechanical component is restored.

Before you fall in love with the shiny paint (90% of the 914s we see for sale), the wheels, the engine sound or the price, make sure there is still a Porsche underneath it all.

Understand What You Are Buying

The Porsche 914 was the result of a joint effort between Volkswagen and Porsche. The body was assembled by coachbuilder Karmann at its factory in Osnabrück, Germany, while much of Porsche’s 911 production during the same era took place in Zuffenhausen. Karmann also produced some 911 bodies, but there was an important difference in the way corrosion protection developed between the two models.

Porsche began introducing galvanized steel into portions of 911 construction around 1970 and expanded its corrosion protection during the following years. By 1976, the entire 911 body was dipped and received much more comprehensive galvanizing.

The 914 did not receive the same metal-saving treatment.

That distinction matters today. The 914 is a steel unibody car. It does not have a separate frame beneath the body. The floors, longitudinals, bulkheads, suspension mounting points, inner fenders and other structural panels all work together.

Put simply: The body is the frame.

That is why the condition of the underlying structure must be established before you begin evaluating paint, interior, engine size, wheels or accessories.

The Coachwerks Restoration Studio Buying Priorities

A first-time buyer can easily become distracted by the features that are easiest to see. Fresh paint, polished wheels, new upholstery and a strong-sounding exhaust can make a car feel more valuable than it is.

A better approach is to evaluate the car in this order:

Priority One: The Body

Begin with structural condition, rust, previous collision damage and the quality of any past repairs. This is where the largest financial surprises are usually hidden.

Priority Two: The Mechanical Package

Once the body has passed inspection, evaluate the engine, transmission, fuel system, brakes, suspension and steering.

Priority Three: Completeness and Correctness

Missing trim, gauges, heater components, fuel-injection parts and model-specific hardware can be surprisingly expensive to replace.

Priority Four: Cosmetics

Paint, carpet, upholstery and finishes matter, but they should come last.

A shiny car with structural rust is still a rusty car. A faded but structurally solid car may be the far better purchase.

The PMB Coachwerks 914 Rust Inspection

That is what makes the hell hole so dangerous. The visible damage may be only a small portion of the actual corrosion.

A serious inspection should include:

  • The battery tray and its support
  • The engine shelf beneath the battery
  • The inner wheelhouse
  • The upper and outer surfaces of the passenger-side longitudinal
  • The inner and outer rear suspension consoles
  • Areas covered by seam sealer, body filler or fresh undercoating

A replacement battery tray is not proof that the hell hole has been repaired correctly. Sometimes it only means that a new tray has been welded over the remains of the old problem.

This area should be inspected from above, below, and through the passenger-side rear wheel opening whenever possible.

A serious pre-purchase inspection should include removal of the rocker covers whenever the seller permits it.

Pay particular attention to:

  • The jack receiver and reinforcement plate
  • The lower longitudinal seam
  • The rear portion of each longitudinal
  • The floor-to-longitudinal seams
  • The seat-belt mounting areas
  • The metal beneath and behind the rocker covers
  • Previous patches, fiberglass or heavy textured coatings

The jack receiver can look acceptable from the outside while the supporting structure behind it has nearly disappeared. A fresh coat of black paint or undercoating can make the area look far healthier than it is.

Longitudinal repair is possible, but it can be complicated. The body must be supported in a fixture or braced before damaged sections are removed. Door gaps, suspension mounting locations, and chassis dimensions must be preserved throughout the repair.

This is why the longitudinals matter more than the floor pans attached to them. A floor panel can usually be replaced relatively easily. Rebuilding the underlying structure is a much larger undertaking.

Water can enter the seam, remain trapped between the panels, and slowly corrode them from the inside. By the time a small bubble appears in the paint, the damage may already extend through several layers of the structure.

Watch for:

  • Paint bubbling beside the rubber trim
  • Cracking at the fender-to-cowl seam
  • Swelling near the lower windshield corner
  • Rust staining near the door hinge area
  • An unusually smooth or heavily filled seam
  • Fresh paint without photographs of the underlying metalwork

This area is difficult to repair correctly because the visible surface is only the outermost part of the problem. A lasting repair may require opening the structure, separating damaged layers, removing the corrosion and rebuilding the panel arrangement.

Most shops take a quicker approach. They carve out the visible rust, apply some rust converter to whatever remains, cover the area with filler and refinish it.

Around the shop, we call this P&P: Paint and Pray. It may look good for a while, but corrosion trapped between the panels always returns.

From above, the pad may look intact. Beneath it, moisture remains trapped against the sheet metal. The muffler and exhaust system repeatedly heat the damp area from below, creating an ideal environment for corrosion.

The result is a kind of rust soup that can remain hidden for years.

A proper inspection should include:

  • Removing the carpet
  • Lifting or removing the factory trunk pad
  • Inspecting beneath both taillight housings
  • Examining the seams around the trunk floor
  • Looking from underneath above the muffler shield
  • Searching for pinholes with a flashlight, swelling, and previous patches

On many cars, the rear trunk pad is no longer actual insulation. It is simply a lid covering the rust.

Localized rear trunk repairs are available and can be performed correctly, but the true extent of the damage cannot be determined until the pad and any loose material are removed.

The Front Apron and Bumper Mounts

The front apron and the sections around the bumper mounts can collect mud, road salt, and debris over the years. Because the affected surfaces are hidden from the front trunk, this area is often overlooked during a casual inspection.

Fortunately, it is relatively easy to examine.

Turn the front wheels to full lock and shine a strong flashlight forward through each front wheel well. Look toward the rear of the front apron and the bumper-mounting structures.

Inspect for:

  • Dirt packed into seams and ledges
  • Rust around the bumper mounts
  • Scaling or perforation in the apron
  • Previous front-end collision repairs

This area is also useful for identifying previous accident damage. Uneven seams, distorted mounting points, and non-factory welds may indicate that the front of the car has been repaired.

Floor Pans: Important, but Not Necessarily a Deal Breaker

Rust in the floor pans deserves attention, but it should be kept in perspective.

The floor is an integral part of the 914’s unibody structure, yet localized floor-pan corrosion alone does not automatically make a car unsuitable for purchase. Compared with damage to the longitudinals, hell hole or suspension mounting areas, floor-pan repair is often relatively straightforward.

Replacement panels are available, access is generally good once the interior has been removed, and an experienced restoration shop can replace damaged sections properly.

What matters is why the floor rusted and how far the corrosion has traveled.

Water can enter through deteriorated windshield seals, roof seals, side-window seals or blocked drains. Once inside, it becomes trapped beneath carpet, insulation and sound-deadening material. The floor may appear reasonably solid from underneath while corrosion advances from the interior side.

Inspect closely:

  • Beneath and behind the seats
  • Around the seat mounts
  • Behind the pedal board
  • Along the floor-to-longitudinal seams
  • Near the rear firewall
  • Around drain plugs and stamped recesses
  • Near the master-cylinder area
  • Beneath carpet and sound-deadening material

The important distinction is between a rusty floor panel and a rusty structure beneath it.

The floor pan is replaceable. The longitudinals supporting it are far more consequential.

Also look carefully at previous repairs. Flat metal welded over the original floor, fiberglass, overlapping patches, excessive seam sealer, and fresh undercoating may conceal the original corrosion rather than correct it.

Floor-pan rust may affect the value of the car, but it should not necessarily end the search. The condition of the surrounding structure should determine the next step.

The passenger-side inner suspension console is especially vulnerable because it sits near the hell hole and battery area. Corrosion can travel downward from the battery tray, through the engine shelf and into the structure surrounding the inner suspension ear.

One of the deceptive things about this area is that the suspension ear can appear relatively solid from the outside while being severely corroded internally. We have seen inner ears that were quite literally full of rust. The outer surface still resembled a suspension mount, while the layered structure inside had deteriorated into scale, debris, and weakened metal.

A thorough inspection should look for:

  • Swollen or separating seams
  • Rust staining
  • Cracked welds
  • Distorted mounting points
  • Reinforcement plates added over questionable metal
  • Previous repairs around the console
  • Corrosion spreading from the hell hole
  • Differences in rear wheel position from side to side

The rear wheels themselves may provide clues. If one wheel sits farther forward or rearward in the opening, if the alignment cannot be brought into specification, or if the car appears to steer from the rear, the suspension console area should be investigated carefully.

The good news is that rear suspension console repairs are available and completely doable. Replacement panels and proven repair procedures exist.

The bad news is that the repair can become extensive and expensive.

A correct repair may require removing the engine and transmission, opening several layers of surrounding structure, rebuilding portions of the inner longitudinal, and accurately locating the new suspension mounting point before welding it into place.

Accuracy is critical. A suspension console installed even slightly out of position can create ongoing alignment and handling problems.

A damaged inner suspension ear does not necessarily mean the car should be rejected, but the cost of the repair must be understood and reflected in the purchase price.

The doors often tell the story.

When we see photographs of a 914 with door gaps that are narrow at the top, wide at the bottom, uneven from side to side, or visibly misaligned at the rear edge, we almost instinctively suspect a problem with the longitudinals, the hell hole, or both.

A door that sticks, drags across the sill, requires lifting to close or does not sit flush with the quarter panel is providing useful information. So is a targa top that is suddenly difficult to install or latch.

When inspecting the car:

  • Compare both door openings
  • Examine the gap at the front and rear of each door
  • Confirm that body lines continue cleanly across the door
  • Open and close both doors several times
  • Watch whether the latch pulls the door upward or downward
  • Check whether the rear edge sits proud or recessed
  • Verify that the targa top fits and latches correctly

Door gaps are not a perfect diagnostic tool. Worn hinge pins, poor adjustment, collision damage, or badly installed replacement panels can also cause alignment problems. Conversely, a car can have respectable door gaps and still contain hidden corrosion.

Even so, incorrect gaps are an important warning.

When the door gaps are visibly wrong in photographs, there is usually a reason. The burden should be on the seller to explain it.

Mechanical Condition: Important, but Second

Once the body has passed inspection, the mechanical condition becomes the next major consideration.

The engine, transmission, brakes, suspension and fuel system can all require substantial investment. The difference is that mechanical problems are generally easier to identify, estimate and repair than hidden structural corrosion.

Your expectations should be based on the type of car you want to purchase.

A restoration buyer may accept a tired engine, worn suspension or non-operating fuel injection because those systems will be rebuilt anyway. A buyer looking for a turn-key car should expect the vehicle to start reliably, run properly, shift correctly, stop safely and operate without immediate major repairs.

Judge the mechanical package against the price of the car and the final car you intend to build—not simply against what is currently installed.

Compression readings should be reasonably consistent across all four cylinders. One weak cylinder, large differences between cylinders or excessive leakage may indicate that the engine is approaching a rebuild.

The car should also be started from cold. Some sellers warm the engine before a buyer arrives because a tired engine, weak cold-start system, or poorly adjusted fuel system may behave better once it is already hot.

During the inspection:

  • Watch for smoke at startup and under acceleration
  • Listen for knocking and excessive valvetrain noise
  • Check for exhaust leaks
  • Confirm that the engine reaches normal operating temperature
  • Verify that it restarts cleanly when hot
  • Look for significant oil leaks
  • Examine the condition and age of the fuel hoses
  • Confirm that the charging system operates properly

Oil seepage is common on air-cooled engines, but there is a substantial difference between a slight seep and an engine that leaves a puddle everywhere it is parked.

Old fuel hoses deserve particular attention. They are not merely an inconvenience or maintenance item. They can become a serious fire risk. New E85 fuels can eat old hoses alive!

A vague shifter does not automatically indicate internal transmission failure. The 914 uses multiple bushings throughout the linkage, and worn bushings can make it difficult to locate gears accurately.

Grinding is a more serious warning.

Drive the car through every gear and pay particular attention to first and second. A healthy transmission should engage without grinding, jumping out of gear, or requiring excessive force.

If the gears grind despite correct clutch operation and careful shifting, the synchronizers are worn. That transmission will likely need to be removed and rebuilt.

Today, that is not a cheap journey.

Parts, specialist labor, shipping, and the additional problems discovered after disassembly can turn a seemingly minor grinding issue into a substantial expense. Do not assume that a fluid change, new shift knob or simple adjustment will correct worn internal components.

Also evaluate:

  • Clutch operation and adjustment
  • Clutch cable condition
  • Pedal assembly wear
  • Engine and transmission mounts
  • Shift-linkage bushings
  • Gear oil leaks
  • Noise during acceleration or deceleration
  • Whether the transmission stays securely in gear

Some external problems can imitate internal transmission trouble, but all of them should be identified before establishing the value of the car.

Fuel Injection and Carburetors

Most four-cylinder Porsche 914s were originally equipped with Bosch fuel injection. When maintained properly, the factory systems work extremely well and provide good cold starting, drivability and fuel economy.

Many cars have been converted to carburetors. That is not automatically a disadvantage, but the reason for the conversion matters.

Some carburetor installations are thoughtfully engineered and properly tuned. Others were installed because a previous owner could not diagnose a vacuum leak, ignition problem, sensor failure, or fuel-delivery issue.

Inspect:

  • Carburetor linkage and synchronization
  • Fuel pressure
  • Air filters
  • Intake manifolds
  • Ignition timing
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Fuel-hose routing
  • Overall workmanship

The engine should start easily, idle consistently and accelerate without hesitation, popping or backfiring.

For a buyer who values originality, missing fuel-injection components should be considered when determining the purchase price. Reassembling a complete and correct system later can be expensive.

Carburetors are not necessarily the problem. Poorly executed problem-solving disguised as a carburetor conversion is the problem.

The car should stop in a straight line without pulling, grinding, pulsation or excessive pedal travel. The pedal should remain firm under steady pressure.

Inspect:

  • Brake calipers
  • Flexible brake hoses
  • Hard lines
  • Master cylinder
  • Rotors and pads
  • Parking-brake cables and mechanisms
  • Wheel bearings
  • Ball joints
  • Tie rods
  • Steering rack
  • Front struts
  • Rear shocks and springs
  • Control-arm and trailing-arm bushings
  • Sway-bar mounts, when equipped

The steering should feel direct and should not contain excessive play. Worn bushings and suspension components can cause the car to wander, clunk, or respond unpredictably.

Mechanical suspension parts can be replaced. The metal they attach to must be sound.

This is another reason a lift inspection is far more valuable than a quick trip around the block.

Completeness and Originality

Missing Parts Can Become Expensive

A mechanically tired but complete car can sometimes be a better purchase than a partially disassembled example accompanied by boxes of unknown parts.

Many small 914 components have become difficult and expensive to replace. Individually, they may not seem significant. Collectively, they can add thousands of dollars and months of searching to a project.

Check for:

  • Targa top and storage hardware
  • Jack and tool kit
  • Spare wheel
  • Engine tin
  • Rain tray
  • Engine-compartment seals
  • Heater components
  • Fuel-injection components
  • Correct gauges
  • Bumper tops
  • Exterior trim
  • Door pockets and interior panels
  • Seat hardware
  • Center console and gauges, when applicable
  • Correct wheels
  • Proper wiring and relays

The rain tray, engine seals, and cooling tin are especially important. Their absence can affect both water management and engine cooling.

Completeness matters most when originality matters. A custom build may not require every factory component, but the buyer should still know exactly what is missing before agreeing on a price.

Previous Repairs and Restoration Work

Fresh paint is not proof of a good restoration.

Warning signs include:

  • Heavy fresh undercoating
  • Thick or misplaced seam sealer
  • Flat sheet metal welded over original panels
  • Overlapping patches
  • Fiberglass in structural areas
  • Body filler near suspension mounts
  • Welds concealed without supporting photographs
  • Fresh paint with no restoration records
  • Reluctance to remove rocker covers or trunk carpeting

Textured coatings and seam sealers are legitimate restoration materials when used properly. They can also be used to conceal poor welding, unfinished rust, and distorted panels.

Ask who performed the work. Request invoices. Look for photographs taken before paint and filler were applied.

A good restoration should have a story that can be documented.

Driver, Project or Full Restoration?

Before shopping, decide what type of 914 you actually want.

A turnkey driver should have a solid body, healthy engine, properly operating transmission, safe brakes, and dependable fuel and electrical systems. It may not be cosmetically perfect, but it should not require immediate major repairs.

A project car may need mechanical or cosmetic work, but the purchase price should leave enough room in the budget to complete that work properly.

A full restoration candidate may be disassembled, incomplete, or non-running, but it should still be evaluated according to its structural condition. Beginning with a severely rusted chassis can make the restoration far more expensive than starting with a higher-priced but solid car.

A weak 1.7-liter engine may not matter if you already intend to build a larger Type 4. A worn suspension may not be a major concern if the project calls for a complete suspension restoration. Missing fuel injection may matter greatly on an originality-focused car and very little on a planned engine conversion.

The least expensive 914 to purchase is often not the least expensive 914 to own.

The Pre-Purchase Inspection

The best investment a first-time buyer can make is a thorough pre-purchase inspection by someone who truly understands the Porsche 914.

A general repair shop may recognize common mechanical problems but overlook model-specific structural issues. The inspection should include the body, underside, engine compartment, trunks, rocker areas, suspension mounts, and all major mechanical systems.

Whenever possible:

  • Remove the rocker covers
  • Lift the rear trunk pad
  • Inspect beneath the battery
  • Examine the hell hole from above and below
  • Inspect both suspension consoles
  • Look through the front wheel wells
  • Check the cowl-to-fender seams
  • Inspect the floor-to-longitudinal joints
  • Observe the door gaps with the car on its wheels
  • Road-test the car from a cold start
  • Perform compression and leak-down testing
  • Check every gear and synchronizer
  • Inspect the car on a lift
  • Review invoices and restoration photographs

Bring a strong flashlight and a small inspection mirror. Look at the car in daylight. Do not allow new paint, polished wheels, or a clean interior to shorten the inspection.

A good pre-purchase inspection cannot guarantee that the car has no problems. It can help make certain that the known problems are reflected in the price.

Final Thoughts: Buy the Body First

The best first 914 is rarely the one with the brightest paint, the largest engine or the lowest advertised price.

It is usually the car with the strongest body, the best documentation and the fewest unanswered questions.

Engines can be rebuilt. Transmissions can be repaired. Brakes, suspensions, interiors and electrical systems can all be restored. Structural rust can also be repaired, but the cost and complexity increase rapidly once it reaches the longitudinals, hell hole, cowl structure and rear suspension consoles.

Floor-pan rust may be manageable. A rusty inner suspension ear may represent a major project. Uneven door gaps may be the first visible sign of damage hidden deep inside the chassis.

Buy the body first. Evaluate the mechanical package second. Consider completeness and originality third. Worry about cosmetics last.

A solid 914 gives its owner choices. It can be preserved, driven, modified, or restored. A severely rusted car often makes that decision for you.
