PMB Feature: Inside Prekom — The Quiet Backbone of Modern Classic Porsche Suspension

Every once in a while, you run into a company that isn’t trying to be loud, but ends up being everywhere once you know what to look for. That’s exactly where Prekom sits in the Porsche world.
We recently had a chance to connect with Igor from Prekom, and it’s one of those stories that lines up perfectly with how a lot of us got into these cars in the first: repeated hands-on, trial by fire experiences, and the realization that there’s a better way to do things.
A Family Business That Found Porsche the Right Way
Prekom has been around for over 45 years, originally working across German car brands, manufacturing, refurbishing, and solving problems for shops that needed parts done right. But like a lot of good Porsche stories, it didn’t start as a business decision, it started as an obsession.
First the father, then the son, both got pulled into Porsche ownership as a hobby. And once you start driving these cars, especially air-cooled cars, you begin to notice things. Not just how they feel, but how they could feel.
After restoring and driving more and more 911s, that realization hit: suspension was one of the biggest areas where these cars could be improved, not just refreshed, but genuinely made better.
That’s where Prekom started narrowing their focus.
Not Just Reproducing Parts—Fixing ThemOne thing that stood out talking to Igor is that Prekom didn’t build their catalog in a vacuum. Over the years, they’ve worked closely with established German shops, real restoration houses, real garages turning wrenches every day. That feedback loop matters. |
|
|
Because anyone can reproduce a part. The hard part is understanding why it failed in the first place, and with 40–60 year old Porsches, those failure points are pretty consistent:
|
Prekom’s approach has been to take those known issues and engineer around them, better materials where it makes sense, tighter control over manufacturing, and in some cases, improving designs beyond what the factory originally delivered.
They’re not guessing either: some of their components are now used within Porsche Classic programs, which tells you everything about the level they’re operating at.
The Stuff People Overlook (But Feel Immediately)
If you’ve been around these cars long enough, you’ve seen it: someone rebuilds an engine, refreshes the brakes, maybe even throws on new wheels, and completely overlooks the suspension.
Then they drive it and say, “It still doesn’t feel right.”
That’s because suspension and steering components are the foundation of how the car communicates.
According to Prekom, one of the biggest things people underestimate when refreshing the suspension is just how much:
-
Safety is improved
-
Braking stability is sharpened
-
Overall confidence at speed is increased
And maybe the biggest one, something we see all the time at PMB:
-
The car starts to feel tight again, like it did when it left the factory
OEM+ Done Right
There’s always a debate in the Porsche world, restore to factory spec, or improve it?
Prekom sits right in that sweet spot.
They’re not chasing gimmicks. They’re taking OEM designs and refining them with:
-
Better materials (especially in high-load components)
-
Updated manufacturing processes
-
Real-world testing from shops that actually drive these cars hard
Igor mentioned there are quite a few parts they produce today that outperform original components and honestly, that tracks with what we’ve seen.
Because Porsche built these cars incredibly well, but they were still working within the limits of materials and production methods of the time… We’re not bound by those antiquated limits anymore.
What This Means for 914s and Air-Cooled 911 BuildsFrom our side at PMB, we’re constantly building and working with customers that are building 914s, 911s, and everything in between, stock restorations, 5-lug conversions, wide-body builds, you name it. And one thing Igor emphasized really lines up with how we approach builds: If the suspension is original,or mostly original, replace as much as possible at once. Why? Because piecemeal upgrades don’t give you the full picture. When everything is refreshed together, you actually get to experience what that car was supposed to feel like. And if you’re going further—doing drivetrain work, conversions, or performance upgrades, suspension should be right at the top of the list after the drivetrain is sorted. It doesn’t make sense to add power if the car can’t put it down properly. |

Where the Market Is Going
Something else we’ve seen - and Prekom has confirmed - is just how much the Porsche world has shifted over the last decade.
Twenty years ago, it was mostly about restorations.
Now?
It’s a mix:
-
Factory-correct builds
-
Restomods
-
Track-focused setups
-
And a ton of cars that are actually being driven daily
Prekom is building for all of it.
And that’s important, because the expectations have changed. People want cars that:
-
Feel original
-
But drive better than original
-
And can handle real-world use without compromise
What They’re Working on NowOne of the more interesting things Igor mentioned is their expansion into newer platforms, specifically the 991 generation.
They’ve just released rear wheel hub bushings for the 991 and 991.2, addressing a failure point that’s becoming more common as those cars age. |
|
|
And they’re not just offering a stock replacement:
Same philosophy, identify the weak point, then give people options depending on how they use the car. |
The Small Parts That Change Everything
We asked “what one part more people should be paying attention to”, and the answer wasn’t some flashy component.
It was the small stuff.
Because in suspension, small changes add up fast.
A slightly tighter tolerance here, a better material there and suddenly:
-
The car tracks straighter under braking
-
Feels more planted at speed
-
Gives you confidence to actually push it
That’s the kind of improvement you don’t always see on paper, but you feel it the second you drive the car.
Final Thoughts from PMB
At the end of the day, Prekom feels a lot like the kind of company we respect most, built out of real-world experience, shaped by feedback from people actually working on these cars, and focused on making them drive the way they should.
Not overcomplicated. Not overhyped.
Just better where it matters.
And if you’ve ever driven a fully sorted air-cooled car, you already know, that’s everything.
