The EMPI 00-4851-0 Rear Shelf is a vinyl-covered speaker shelf that mounts behind the rear seat of a VW Type 1 Beetle sedan, giving you a home for a pair of speakers and hidden storage below. EMPI builds it on a wood sub-structure covered in heavy-duty black vinyl. Two 5 inch diameter speaker holes are cut in the wood on the underside. EMPI's photos show smooth vinyl across the top, with a note that the holes are in the wood only. The shelf also creates concealed storage behind the seat, which keeps bags and valuables out of sight from outside the car. EMPI's parts index calls it the rear speaker shelf for the Type 1 sedan, all years.
Because the vinyl top is left whole, plan how the speakers will show through before you install it. Open the vinyl over each hole when you fit the speakers, and add grilles if you want the cones covered. Check your speakers against the 5 inch holes, and check their mounting depth against the space under the shelf, before you buy them. The black vinyl suits black interiors and pairs with other EMPI interior pieces built the same way. EMPI's 16-9555-0 center console for 1968–1979 Type 1 sedans and convertibles is also black vinyl over wood, with a shift boot, a cupholder, and two storage compartments. Ordering both gives the front and rear of the cabin a matching finish.

Fitment & Compatibility
EMPI fits the shelf to all Type 1 models except convertibles, and its parts index lists it for the Type 1 sedan in all years. Convertible owners should look elsewhere. On sedans, confirm that the speakers you plan to use clear the area under the shelf before cutting the vinyl.
Common Questions
Will this fit my Beetle convertible?
No. EMPI excludes convertibles. It is made for the Type 1 sedan.
What size speakers fit the holes?
The holes are 5 inch diameter and cut in the wood. Compare that with the cut-out size and mounting depth your speakers call for.
Are the speaker holes cut through the vinyl?
EMPI marks the holes as wood only, and the vinyl top is shown smooth, so you open the vinyl yourself when the speakers go in.
